Why We Ring the Bell at SteerBridge
How process improvement, communication, and Veteran perspective help keep complex modernization connected to the people it serves
Modernization can get technical fast.
Systems. Processes. Rules. Data. Deliverables. Schedules. Teams.
On a complex federal program, every one of those pieces matters. But Christopher Panzica has learned that the work only moves when people understand how those pieces fit together and why they matter.
Chris supports SteerBridge’s Modern Disability Claims Project as Director of Operations / PMO Lead. His work centers on process improvement, operational coordination, and communication. In practice, that means helping people see the bigger picture, work through friction, and keep moving together.
That approach comes from years of experience. Chris served 20 years and three months in the Marine Corps, where operations, process, and training were part of the job. After leaving the service, he moved into government contracting and took on work involving team growth, recruiting operations, process improvement, and organizational scale.
When he joined SteerBridge in recruiting operations, the challenge was familiar: build more consistency into a growing organization. Later, he was asked to bring the same mindset to the Modern Disability Claims Project.
Helping Different Teams Work as One
One thing Chris noticed quickly was that the challenge wasn’t a lack of expertise.
There were smart, experienced people on both the operational and technical sides. The harder part was getting people with different backgrounds to understand the same problem in the same way.
Operational teams understood the VA environment and the domain. Technical teams understood the systems. But shared understanding didn’t happen automatically.
Chris saw a place where he could help.
He talks about drawing the problem out, changing how he explains something depending on the person in front of him, and making room for the conversation that gets everyone to a common understanding.
“Everything on this project has to work in unison,” he says.
That shows up in the way he leads day to day. Chris uses one-on-one conversations to surface issues that may never come up in a larger meeting. He listens for what people need, connects information across teams, and tries to separate what matters right now from what can wait.
The goal isn’t communication for its own sake. It’s better execution.
People need enough context to know where they fit, what matters now, and how their work affects someone else.
Keeping the Veteran in the Frame
For Chris, that someone else is never theoretical.
He’s a Veteran who served more than two decades in the Marine Corps. All three of his children are currently on active duty.
So the mission hits close to home.
“It’s not about SteerBridge, not even about the VA. It’s about the Veteran and their family,” he says.
That perspective shapes the way he talks about quality and responsibility. From inside a program, a workflow can look like a series of technical steps. From the outside, it can mean a person is waiting for an answer.
Chris doesn’t want the team to lose sight of that.
He sees the mission as bigger than any one person, team, or task. That’s also why he pushes for focus. When capacity is limited and priorities compete, the team has to stay on the work that moves the mission forward.
Technology Should Make Experienced People Faster
Chris also has a clear view of what technology should and shouldn’t do in a Veteran-facing process.
He sees AI and machine learning as tools that can help experienced people work through complex information faster. But that doesn’t mean removing human review.
“We’re never going to remove a human in the loop,” Chris says.
In his view, human quality control still matters because experienced people have to decide whether the work is correct and consistent with the rules, standards, and real-world context around it.
That’s a practical way to think about responsible modernization. Technology can help prepare the work and move it faster. People still have to own the outcome.
When the process affects Veterans and their families, that accountability matters.
Leadership Through Listening and Buy-In
Chris takes a similarly practical approach to leadership.
“Treat others as I want to be treated,” he says.
For him, that means listening to people’s concerns, understanding where they’re coming from, and finding a way to connect their perspective to what the project needs.
He doesn’t expect one person to have every answer.
“Five brains are better than one,” Chris says.
People are more likely to care about the work when they understand it and have a real role in shaping how it gets done.
Chris’s job isn’t to direct every move. It’s to create enough clarity, trust, and shared understanding for capable people to solve problems together.
The Mission on the Other Side of the Workflow
Chris’s story is a reminder that modernization is ultimately about people doing complicated work well and staying connected to the mission.
Whether modernization involves a facility, a digital system, or a benefits workflow, the work only becomes useful when people can connect requirements, teams, technology, and the mission.
That’s where Chris fits.
He helps people see the whole.
He keeps teams connected.
He uses technology to speed up the work without giving up human accountability.
And he keeps the Veteran on the other side of the workflow in view.
