SteerBridge proudly announces that Colonel James “Chewy” Frey, a distinguished Marine and key team member, has been honored by the U.S. Marine Corps with a prestigious award named in his recognition. Beginning in 2025, the James W. Frey Award will be presented annually to the Marine Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Officer of the Year, marking a rare honor for one of the few living legends in Marine Corps history. This award is a testament to Frey’s outstanding leadership, dedication, and groundbreaking contributions to UAS within Marine aviation.
With over 30 years of service, Frey’s career spans a wealth of achievements, from deployments in Operation SOUTHERN WATCH and Operation IRAQI FREEDOM to commanding Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron-Three (VMU-3) during pivotal moments in Iraq and Afghanistan. Under his command, VMU-3 operationalized UAS in critical Marine Corps operations, helping reshape battlefield strategies and integrate unmanned systems in unprecedented ways.
Frey’s innovation didn’t stop at the battlefield. He spearheaded the creation of the Marine UAS officer designation and led the development of the MAGTF Unmanned Expeditionary program. His contributions laid the groundwork for the future of Marine Corps aviation, from contracting MQ-9s for combat zones to the development of UAS-specific training and qualifications.
“I’m humbled and honored by this recognition,” Frey said. “It has always been about serving alongside great Marines and advancing how we employ new technologies for the mission at hand. The award is a tribute to all the Marines, NAVAIR, Civilian, and Industry personnel who made these achievements possible.”
SteerBridge, a company that champions veteran leadership and innovation, is immensely proud to celebrate this honor with Frey. His legacy at SteerBridge continues to reflect the company’s core values of integrity, bold leadership, and a commitment to excellence.
As we look ahead to the 2025 Marine Corps Aviation Awards, we invite our community to join us in congratulating Colonel Frey and reflecting on the enduring legacy of the Marines.
